Tutoring
I am an enthusiastic tutor, with over ten years experience tutoring maths and physics, from primary to A-level, as well as at university level. I have a 1st Class Degree in Physics (2008) and a PhD in Biophysics (2013) from The University of Leeds. I am a qualified science teacher with a PGCE and I work as an Associate Lecturer in mathematics for The Open University.
I'm passionate about learning and helping students to build confidence and understanding in maths and physics, subjects often seen as difficult and uninteresting. I am a patient teacher and am careful to adapt my teaching style to suit each student's needs, whatever age or ability. Key to achieving good grades is having confidence, being interested, doing lots of practice questions, and targeting answers to match exam mark schemes.
I mostly help students at GCSE or A-Level, but I also have experience tutoring maths and physics at lower secondary levels, and in preparing students for college or university entrance exams in physics and maths e.g. the ESAT, TMUA (previously Oxford University's Physics Aptitude and Maths Aptitude tests and Cambridge University's Natural Sciences Admissions Assesment). If you are interested in tutoring support for an undergraduate degree course involving mathematics and physics, please also get in touch.
Background
I have a broad academic and career background. I studied Maths, Physics and Music at A-level, and gained my first degree in Music, from University of Oxford (1998). I worked in the IT sector as a developer and programmer, working on website, software and e-publishing projects, before returning to The University of Leeds to study Physics. I then went on to do a PhD in Biophysics, researching the mechanical properties of muscle proteins for the Wellcome Trust. I trained as a secondary school Physics teacher with Red Kite Teacher Training in 2017-18 (gaining my PGCE from The University of Leeds) and worked as a secondary school Physics teacher in the local area. I now work as a private tutor as well as an Associate Lecturer in mathematics for The Open University.
I live in Otley north of Leeds in England with my wife and two sons who keep me busy. I'm a keen violinist and road cyclist.
